Several people have asked me why I wanted to dye my hair blue. There is no one reason. I once saw someone with electric blue hair hair and thought it looked pretty cool. Also, on a web site where I needed an avatar I gave myself blue hair and I guess I just fancied doing something a little crazy.

I bought a packet of electric blue dye about 6 months ago but was waiting for the right time to use it. I decided it was last week for the band’s Xmas gig in my local pub. It was not a huge success. My hands were blue, my face was blue, the sink was blue and my hair....a sort of dirty grey colour except where the wisps of natural grey had turned blue. This was 24 hours before the gig. I took advice from a hairdresser who said that with my hair colouring I would really need to have it bleached before adding colour, and therein lay a dilemma, which questioned the integrity of the bucket list.

I have never bleached my hair, so this felt like a very dramatic thing to do - much more dramatic than dying it blue which would wash out in a couple of weeks anyway. I then started wondering whether  I could “get the effect” by buying a blue wig, but that sat very uncomfortably with me. Almost as if I was “cheating on the bucket list”. It then worried me that if so early on in the bucket list I started taking the easier options, then how would this affect things I do as I move through the list, so it had to be done. I bought a second packet of blue dye went to the hairdressers, had my hair bleached and then the blue dye added. Frankly, it didn't look much different from my own attempts, so although I had blue hair for the gig it was pretty subtle.

So I did some research on the Internet, found a company that supplied bright hair colourants and I bought one called electric blue, which I applied myself - and hey presto - I have electric blue hair! This photo isn’t especially good as it was a self portrait setting on my phone in not the best of light - but here is the proof that I had blue hair, and I feel that the integrity of the bucket list is safe! I am now more or less back to “normal” ... If “normal” is a word one would use to describe me.....
